What is HSRP?
High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are number plates for vehicles introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) in 2001. These plates are made from 1 mm special grade aluminium and are laminated with reflective sheets in white, yellow, green, or black, depending on the vehicle category and registration type. The characters on the plates are embossed and hot-stamped with black foil that includes security inscriptions to prevent tampering and enhance vehicle identification security.
Laser Number:

HSRPs are equipped with a laser identification number (LID) etched on the surface, which is unique to each plate across India and cannot be erased. This number is linked to all relevant vehicle details such as the Registration Number, Make, Model, Engine Number, Chassis Number, etc., and is electronically stored in the Government's VAHAN database. The laser number helps verify the authenticity of the number plate and ensures the vehicle's legitimacy.

Snap Locks:

HSRPs are affixed to vehicles using tamper-evident, non-removable, and non-reusable snap locks. This makes it extremely difficult to remove the number plate once it has been installed, thereby preventing criminals from stealing and replacing HSRPs with ordinary plates.

Reflective Sheet:

The HSRP features a white or yellow reflective sheet laminated on its surface, enhancing the vehicle's visibility at night and helping to reduce the risk of accidents.

Standard Format:

There are only four standardized sizes of HSRP, and the registration numbers are clearly embossed, ensuring high readability. This clarity helps law enforcement agencies identify and track vehicles more effectively, aiding in crime prevention.

Excellent Finish:

HSRPs are manufactured using high-quality raw materials, often imported from Germany and Japan, and produced using advanced technology in the Netherlands. This results in number plates with an excellent finish and superior appearance, improving the overall look of the vehicle.

Yes, under Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989, it is mandatory for all vehicles to be fitted with a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP).
The Third Registration Plate include the following details:
  • Name of the Registering Authority
  • Registration Number of the Vehicle
  • Laser-Branded Permanent Identification Number
  • Date of First Registration of the Vehicle
To have the HSRP affixed on your old or existing vehicle in Maharashtra, follow the process outlined below:
  • Visit www.maharashtrahsrp.com and click on "Order HSRP."
  • Enter the basic vehicle details along with your mobile number registered in the VAHAN database.
  • Choose an authorized fitment location that is convenient for you.
  • Select the date and time for the fitment based on slot availability.
  • Pay the HSRP fee online.
  • Visit the selected fitment location on the scheduled date and time to have the HSRP affixed to your vehicle.

Yes, you can request only the sticker if your vehicle is already fitted with an HSRP. To do this, select the "ONLY STICKER" option and provide the unique laser codes located at the bottom left corner of the front and rear HSRP plates on your vehicle.
No documents are required for the booking of an HSRP or Color-Coded Sticker.
Mobile numbers and email IDs are required to send updates regarding the booking confirmation, availability of HSRP at the dealer point, and OTP for affixation. A system has been established to share SMS and email updates periodically about your order. It is essential to provide a correct mobile number to ensure you receive these notifications.
Yes, you can select a convenient appointment time and location for the affixation of the HSRP on your vehicle.

No, changing the affixation location after booking your order is not allowed.
No, you cannot collect the HSRP and fit it on your vehicle on your own.
Yes, the vehicle is required to be present for the affixation of the HSRP and sticker.
The HSRP plate comes with a five-year warranty specifically for the reflective sheeting, as defined in Rule 50 of the CMVR, 1989.
Exclusions :
The warranty will not be valid if the HSRP plate:
  • Is wiped, rubbed, or scratched with harsh abrasive materials, petrol, diesel, grease, detergents, acids, alkaline solutions, chemicals, solvents, abrasive cleaners, caustic cleaners, carbon or soot removers, degreasers, descales, deoxidizers, desmutters, disinfectants, sanitizers, biocides, germicides, sporicides, paint or coating strippers, or any other removers.
  • Suffers accidental damage.
  • Has additional drills made or screws fitted to the plates.
  • Is damaged during affixation by the dealer.
  • Is mishandled, resulting in bent or warped plates.

Escalation Matrix for Warranty Claim
Reporting the Issue:

The customer or dealer reports the HSRP defect by submitting a grievance along with a picture of the HSRP plate.

Problem Review:

FTA reviews the reported issue and responds with an appropriate resolution.

Claim Decision:
If Covered Under Warranty:

A new part or warranty repair will be processed and provided by FTA.

If Not Covered Under Warranty:

A communication is sent to the customer/dealer explaining the reason for the rejection of the claim.

To request a replacement, please follow these steps:

  • Follow the instructions and select the reason for the replacement (Damaged/Lost).
  • Provide the required details as prompted.
For a damaged plate:Upload an image of the front or rear plate. For a lost or damaged plate: :Upload a copy of the FIR (First Information Report).

No, the delivery (affixation) will be done as per the scheduled appointment date.
Yes, for three-wheelers and four-wheelers, the 3rd color-coded sticker will be provided along with the single number plate. This is not applicable for two-wheelers.
